The Cornish Rex is a strikingly unique, small-to-medium-sized cat breed known for its soft, wavy coat and playful, “kitten-like” personality that often lasts throughout its life.
Often called the “Greyhound of the cat world” because of its slender, athletic build and arched back, this breed originated in Cornwall, England, in 1950 following a natural genetic mutation in a litter of barn cats.
Physical Characteristics
The most defining feature of a Cornish Rex is its marcel-waved coat, which is incredibly soft and lacks the coarse outer “guard hairs” found in most other cats.
Build: Slender and fine-boned but muscular, with long, delicate legs and a tucked-up waist.
Head: Small and egg-shaped with high cheekbones, a prominent Roman nose, and very large, wide-set ears.
Eyes:
Medium to large, oval-shaped, and available in any colour, including blue, gold, or green.
Size:
Typically weighs between 6 and 10 pounds.
Colors:
They come in over 40 colors and patterns, including solid, bicolor, tabby, tortoiseshell, and pointed.

Personality and Temperament
Cornish Rexes are highly social and energetic “people cats”.
Active & Athletic:
They love to climb, jump, and sprint. They are known for being agile and often enjoy playing fetch or learning new tricks.
Affectionate:
They thrive on human attention and are famous for being “lap cats” because they seek out warmth due to their thin coats.
Social:
They generally get along well with children and other pets, including dogs, but may become destructive if left alone for long periods.
Care and Health
Grooming:
Their coat is low-maintenance and sheds very little, though they are not hypoallergenic. They may need occasional baths to manage oil buildup on their skin.
Environment: Best kept as indoor cats; their sparse coats make them highly sensitive to cold and prone to sunburn.
Lifespan:
They typically live between 11 and 20 years.
Common Issues: Potential genetic health concerns include Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (heart disease), Patellar Luxation (kneecap issues), and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (vision loss).
