The kittens were left alone right after they were born. They were so small that their eyes had not yet opened. So there was no one to look after their hygiene. When they were brought to us, they were very dirty and had to be bathed right away. We took flea shampoo as a preventive. The kittens did not like it very much and they kept squeaking and meowing loudly. But as soon as they got on a warm towel after the bath, they immediately calmed down.
